PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT |
Identity theft is a crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person's personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain.
With your stolen identity, thieves can use your existing accounts, place money orders, open fraudulent accounts, forge checks, transfer titles, establish utilities, file fraudulent income tax returns, file bankruptcy, commit crimes, and more!
All of the above crimes occur without your knowledge. That is, until after the damage is done. It may even take a year or two before the average person recognizes that he or she is a victim of identity theft. By then the thieve is long gone, and you are not able to recover from him (or her).

Invest in a Shredder - Cost (personal $35 to commercial $800)
Honea Federal Credit Union has a commercial grade shredder, which cuts in a "diamond cross cut" manner. All documents with personal information are shredded on a daily basis.
For your personal documents, an effective shredder should cut in a "diamond cross cut" manner. If you do not have a shredder, then the next best alternative is to tear your documents and place pieces of it in several waste containers or plastic bags. A minimum of 3 containers should be used, but the more the better. Discard the containers or plastic bags at different times when the Refuse Department picks up your weekly trash. This may seem like a lot of effort, but as the saying goes, "better to do the extra work, than to be sorry later."
